Life Story for Leon Osborn

Mr. Leon Osborn, age 88, of Bennington, Indiana, entered this life on October 16, 1923, in Switzerland County, Indiana, the son of Chester E. & Elizabeth (Mathis) Osborn, both of whom preceded him in death. He was raised near Bennington, Indiana, where he attended school & resided most of his life. Leon was inducted into the United States Army on March 15, 1943, rising to the rank of Corporal, serving in the 552nd AAF Base Unit during World War II. Leon received the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal & the World War II Victory Medal & was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946. Leon was united in marriage on January 18, 1947, in Vevay, Indiana, to Barbara Jean Pate & they enjoyed nearly 58 years of marriage together until her death on January 16, 2005. Leon had farmed all his life on the family farm near Bennington, Indiana, raising tobacco, corn & cattle. He was employed for 25 years at the Muscatatuck State Hospital in Butlerville, Indiana, retiring in 1995. He was a former employee for the State Highway Department. Leon will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, farming, his tractors & especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Vevay VFW Post #5396. Leon died at 8:40 pm Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, IN.

Leon will be missed by his daughters: Mary Jo Taylor of Hanover, IN; Linda Hehe & her husband: Joe of Center Square, IN; his son: John David Osborn of Bennington, IN; his grandchildren: Paul Hopper Jr., Jeffrey Hopper, Michelle Smith & her husband: Glen, James Hehe, Cheryl Saunders & her husband: David, Amanda Higham & her husband: Ricky, Angel Haynes & her husband Jeremiah & Timothy Hehe; his great-grandchildren: Victoria Hopper, Brendan Courter, Jacqueline Courter, Abel Higham & Alexia Haynes.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Chester E. & Elizabeth (Mathis) Osborn; his wife: Barbara Jean (Pate) Osborn; his sons: James Russell Osborn & Rickie Leon Osborn; his great-grandchildren: Jasmine Nicole Saunders & Micah Joseph Saunders; his sister: Marie Osborn; his brothers: Nathan M. Osborn & Franklin Osborn.
