Life Story for John Scudder

Rev. John Scudder, age 90, of East Enterprise, Indiana, entered this life on January 6, 1928, in Switzerland County, Indiana, the loving son of the late, James Ora and Bessie (Reed) Scudder. He was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana and was a 1945 graduate of the Vevay High School. John was inducted into the United States Army on June 12, 1945, in Louisville, Kentucky, serving during World War II. John earned the World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on May 28, 1947, at Fort Lawton, Washington. John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Paulina Sigmon on July 3, 1949, at the Long Run Baptist Church in Moorefield, Indiana. This happy union was blessed with a daughter, Susan and a son, Dennis. John and Paulina shared 66 loving years of marriage together until Paulina passed away on July 2, 2015. John was employed as an edge trimmer for the US Shoe Factory in Vevay, Indiana, for four years. He was employed in 1953 for the Indiana State Police Department as a trooper for 13 years, detective sergeant for nine years and first sergeant for seven years. John retired in 1983 after 29 years of service. John earned his pastoral degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. Rev. John served as a minister from 1985 - 2013 for the Holton United Methodist Church in Holton, Indiana, Fairview United Methodist Church, Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and for the East Enterprise United Methodist Church. He was a Southeastern Indiana board member for the SCIOC and served on the merit board for the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department and was a faithful member of the East Enterprise United Methodist Church. John was one of the beginning organizers of Harmony and Hymns on Tuesday's at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and was faithful until his health no longer permitted. John was passionate about the American Red Cross and had a very giving spirit and was a dedicated donor. John will be remembered for his love of reading and gardening and will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends. Rev John Scudder went to be with his Lord and Savior at 11:45 a.m., Sunday, April 8, 2018, at the Waldron Health and Rehab Center in Waldron, Indiana.

Rev. John is survived by his son, Dennis Alan Scudder and his wife: Rachel of Shelbyville, IN; his daughter, Susan Diane Alexander and her husband: Rodney of Mesa, AZ; his grandchildren, Michael Alexander, Claire Scudder and Laura Scudder and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ora Scudder, died March 8, 1990 and Bessie (Reed) Scudder, died May 20, 1975; his wife, Paulina (Sigmon) Scudder, died July 2, 2015; his brother, James Earl Scudder; his sister, Marjorie Stivers and his infant sister, Mary Hazel Scudder.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 13, 2018, at 11:00 am, by Chaplain Daniel Coffey at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 & the Vevay VFW Post #5396 in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
