Life Story for
Mr. Alvin Harvey Cole, age 100, of Fairview, Indiana, entered this life on January 27, 1918, in Fairview, Indiana. Alvin was one of thirteen children born to the parents of, Harvey Elmer "Hub" and Nellie (Newkirk) Cole. He was raised in Bennington, Indiana and was a 1936 graduate of the Vevay High School. He enrolled in accounting at the IU Extension in Kokomo, Indiana. He attended the La Salle University in Chicago for two years for accounting and the University of Wisconsin for two years for accounting when he was serving his country. Alvin was united in marriage on August 14, 1940 in Kokomo, Indiana, to the late, Kathleen Shoemaker. This happy union was blessed with four children, Sherry, David, Karen and Rick. Alvin and Kathleen shared 75 loving years of marriage together until she passed away on August 17, 2015. Alvin was inducted into the United States Army Air Force on March 18, 1943, serving during World War II. He served in Saipan and earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Alvin was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on January 13, 1946. After the service, Alvin worked at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison, Indiana. He served as auditor for Switzerland County and was also employed for Grays Electric as a lead electrician in the 1950's. Alvin was a route salesman for Borden's Company from 1937 to 1952. Alvin was employed on June 30, 1961 for the State Board of Accounts, retiring in 1984 after 23 1/2 years of service. Alvin and Kathleen prepared taxes with their son, Rick for the Comprehensive Tax Service in Kokomo, Indiana, from 1991 to 2009. He was a faithful member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Fairview, Indiana. On January 27, 2018, Alvin received the distinguished Hoosier Award from Governor Eric J. Holcomb. He was also a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and received the 70 year membership award on March 11, 2018. Alvin loved farming and tending to his crops and animals and will be remembered for his love of his family. Alvin passed away at 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 11, 2018, at the Ripley Crossing in Milan, Indiana.
Alvin will be deeply missed by his children, Sherry Courtney and her husband: Gerald of Mesa, AZ, David Cole and his wife: Renee of Rising Sun, IN, Karen Kelleher and her husband: Paul of Sellersburg, IN and Rick Cole of Kokomo, IN; his grandchildren, Randy, Lisa, Angie, Sean, Devin, Erin, Megan, Patrick, Maddie and Alisha; his great-grandchildren, Laura, Joseph, Chris, Trevor, Nicole, Colton, Dillon, Davian, Isabella, Addison, Jackson, Ella and Max; his great-great-grandchildren, Aydn, Thor, Odin and Luna; his sisters-in-law, Marcella Cole of Fairview, IN and Wilma Cole of Fairview, IN and his numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Elmer "Hub" and Nellie (Newkirk) Cole; his wife, Kathleen (Shoemaker) Cole, died August 17, 2015; his granddaughter, Michelle Courtney; his grandson-in-law, John Knight; his brothers, Wilfred, Raymond, Hilbert, Dilver, Donald and Emerson Cole; his sisters, Arlena Brown, Golda Hebel, Hazel Wiley, Pearl Byram, Mavis Scudder and Leo Gulley; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence Olin and Lula (Medley) Shoemaker; his brother-in-law, Max Shoemaker and his sisters-in-law, Jean Foreman and Eileen Barnhill.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 10:00 a.m., by Pastor Corey Potts at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.
Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
